Apostille

An apostille is a certification issued by the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that verifies the authenticity of the signature and the capacity in which the Peruvian official acted on a document issued in Peru, in accordance with the 1961 Hague Convention, which abolished the requirement for legalization of foreign public documents. The main goal is to ensure that public documents originating in one country can be legally recognized in another member country of the Convention, eliminating the need for diplomatic or consular legalization.

In Peru, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the competent authority responsible for issuing apostilles for public documents. Common documents that require an apostille include birth, marriage, and death certificates; academic transcripts and degrees; professional titles; notarial and judicial documents; among others.

It is important to note that the apostille certifies the authenticity of the public official’s signature and their official capacity, but does not verify the content of the document itself.
